DETAILS

The Original is a sci-fi drama short film about letting go, dependency and the extreme choices we are willing to make in pursuit of happiness. The film explores these ideas through a dark drama lens with elements of horror.

We focus on Alana, a woman whose partner, Gwendolyn, is in the final stages of locked-in syndrome. They are offered a chance to regain the life they thought they had lost through a procedure that will transfer Gwendolyn's consciousness into a healthy clone. Although the procedure initially appears to be a success, Alana is soon informed that something has gone terribly wrong, forcing her to make an impossible choice.

Although the world of The Original is one where salsa-dancing, cloning and consciousness transfer exist it is far from a utopia. It is a world where processes, procedures and passive-aggressive bureaucrats rule. The operation takes place in a decaying and oppressive public health clinic run by cynical workers that have become far too used to witnessing this miracle. This creates a contrasting backdrop for Alana and Gwendolyn's hope and optimism.
